Serving the Counties of Kern, Kings, and Tulare, Junior Achievement of Bakersfield (JA) serves more Hispanic/Latino youth than almost any other JA office in the country. We are committed to serving the Hispanic/Latino youth in our service area as effectively as possible. To do this, we are launching the JA Hispanic Initiative. Through the JA Hispanic Initiative, JA will partner with Hispanic/Latino community organizations in an effort to improve the quality of life for young Latinos and their families. This will be accomplished by introducing successful Hispanic mentors into local classrooms to teach vital JA programs. These individuals will serve as role models, inspiring students to achieve excellence in their academic lives, set goals, and pursue their dreams, despite what their peers or circumstances might suggest. The JA Hispanic Initiative includes supplemental activities to JA’s programs, which stress the importance of being bilingual in a global economy, staying in school, and the importance of the family as a strong economic unit. The supplemental activities also include activities designed to engage and involve parents in their children’s education, one of the most important factors linked to academic success. JA is reaching out to Latino/Hispanic individuals and organizations, seeking to build a strong group of JA Volunteer Mentors to enter hundreds of classrooms in Kern, Kings, and Tulare Counties. We are also forming a JA Hispanic Initiative Advisory Council to help us marshal widespread community support for this effort. Here’s how you can get involved: Become a JA Hispanic Initiative Volunteer Mentor We need Latino volunteers to serve as role models. By sharing your own business, educational, and life experiences, you can give students a broader view of the world and the possibilities that await them. JA makes it easy for you to make a difference in the lives of the young people in your community. Here’s how it works… Call
